1. User Account Changes

Problem

User user_primary was the only account and had full sudo access including NOPASSWD via /etc/sudoers.d/user_primary. Root password was locked. No other admin user existed.

Changes Made

Created user commander (UID 1001) with sudo access

- Removed from sudo group (deluser user_primary sudo)
- Deleted /etc/sudoers.d/user_primary (had user_primary ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL)
Enabled root login
- Password: [REDACTED] user_primary adm cdrom dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare (no sudo)

2. SSH Key Setup

Added local SSH keys (ed25519 + RSA) to commander and root authorized_keys
Passwordless SSH works: ssh [email protected] and ssh [email protected]

3. RustDesk Reinstall

Problem

RustDesk 1.4.0 was installed but connection from local machine failed. Config mismatch between machines (user_primary’s on remote.lab.internal, local was on rs-ny.rustdesk.com).

Changes Made

Uninstalled RustDesk 1.4.0 and removed all configs
Installed RustDesk 1.4.5 (latest) via apt
Configured for remote.lab.internal server

5. Printer Issue (UNRESOLVED)

Problem

Brother HL-L3290CDW series printer not printing. CUPS shows jobs as “Connected to printer” but they never complete.

Diagnosis

Printer is configured at: 192.168.0.104
Machine is on: 10.42.0.174/24 (House WiFi WiFi)
Different subnets - no route between them
Ping to 192.168.0.104: 100% packet loss
TCP connects but data transfer times out
mDNS/avahi CAN see the printer (broadcasts on local segment)
Printer advertises itself at 192.168.0.104 via mDNS

Root Cause

Power surge likely knocked the printer’s network config. Printer has a static IP of 192.168.0.104 from an old network setup. It’s physically on the same network but has a mismatched subnet IP.

CUPS Config

Switched from lpd://192.168.0.104/BINARY_P1 to ipp://BRW30C9AB1824C9.local/ipp/print
Still doesn’t work due to IP mismatch

Fix Required (Physical Access)

Go to printer control panel: Menu > Network > TCP/IP > Boot Method > DHCP/Auto
Printer will restart and get 10.42.0.x address
Then reconfigure CUPS: lpadmin -p Brother_HL-L3290CDW_series -v "ipp://NEW_IP/ipp/print" -E

6. Zorin 18 Upgrade (PENDING)

Zorin OS 17.3 (based on Ubuntu 22.04 “jammy”)

Upgrade Path

Official upgrade from Zorin 17 to 18 is in early testing. Steps:

As user_primary: gsettings set com.zorin.desktop.upgrader show-test-upgrades true
As commander: su - commander then sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
Open Upgrade Zorin OS app from Zorin Menu > System Tools
Select Zorin OS 18 and follow prompts
Restart when prompted
