Why Build All This?

Ownership

Cloud services know everything. What files I store. When I access them. What I watch, read, and write. The alternative: run it yourself, on hardware you own, in your own home. No third party reading your metadata.

Learning

I spent years using technology without understanding how it worked. The only way to learn is to break things. And you can't break things on a system you don't own. So here we are, at 11 PM on a Saturday.

Longevity

Systems that last 10+ years. No corporate dependencies. Gentoo has been continuously maintained since 2002. Btrfs snapshots mean 2-minute recovery from any mistake. Past Me leaves documentation for Future Me.
